One big issue with electronic road signs is that security is seldomly ever “good” for them. They are controlled by Police, a specific city, or a combination of the two. Usually, they have fairly easy usernames and passwords. The same issue happened with electronic billboards, although those are operated by various people. As a result of this ease of access, your average hacker could get in.
[Image via Austin American-Statesman]Some of the best hacks on road signs have happened in Texas. One of the best was done by Geoffrey Eltgroth. He happened across one and easily guessed the username & password. He then changed the electronic sign to read: “Drive Crazy Ya’ll.” An attempt to annoy the police who might see motorists traveling fast just because a sign told them to. Someone closeby saw what happened and called the police. Geoffrey was arrested a short time after and charged with “criminal mischief.”
