39. There Are Not 24 Hours In An Earth Day

Outside of the Earth on other planets, the days could be longer or shorter. In the movie Interstellar, there was a moment where some of the characters were gone for what amounted to a few hours on a planet. It turned out that compared to the Earth’s time, this had been several years. This is incredible but possible to see depending on the size of the planet visited.

Yet we should not measure our Earth time as we know it when trying to compare it to other planets. There are not 24 hours in an Earth day. Our actual Earth day is actually 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds. We simply rounded it out to a 24 hour day because it is easier to remember. Therefore, we’ve been stealing time from various Earth days for centuries.
