They Sleep Holding Hands
Just like young children, otters sleep holding hands, too. This isn’t necessarily because they want to be close to each other, but it has survival purposes, too. “Sea otters, particularly mothers and pups, sometimes hold hands while floating on their backs. Hand-holding keeps the otters from drifting away from each other and their food source while they sleep”. When you think about it like this, it seems pretty tactful. They also sleep wrapped in strands of kelp and use it like a blanket. It not only keeps them warm, but it also prevents them from floating out onto the open ocean. Mother also tends to keep their babies close to their belly’s so they don’t drift away. If you compare it to humans, it’s similar to mothers sleeping with their children in bed with them.
