Success – Dropbox
- Current Company Value: Around $8.90 Billion
While Dropbox has experienced some criticism over the years, they remain one of the best in the world at what they do. Well before Apple and others introduced their cloud service, Dropbox was the only true game in town for major file sharing. Today they operate as a file hosting service and offer cloud storage, file synchronization, personal cloud, and client software. To think, all of this was started in 2007 by two MIT students, Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi. While they did get some seed funding from Y Combinator, a known seed accelerator, they began profiting relatively soon.
As of 2021, at least 700 million people have used Dropbox or currently utilize it in some form. This is likely due to the company ensuring pretty much any major device can use their service from your normal desktop computer to mobile phone and tablet. They can run off the Windows and iOS systems, along with Android and Linux. The company has even developed partnerships with companies like Microsoft, Meta, Salesforce, and Samsung. After the last major security breaches in 2017, Dropbox has worked to secure its website from hackers. This includes the use of two-factor authorization and 256-bit AES encryption. Along with TLS and SSL services for data.
